5 Unexpected Problems That Can Derail a dvLED Installation, and How to Avoid Them

LED's Talk Blog dvLED Installation Best Practices

If you've been installing dvLED for any length of time, you already know one thing: no project ever goes exactly according to plan.

  • The drawings look great.

  • The schedule is locked in.

  • The displays have arrived.

  • The customer is excited.

  • Your crew is ready to get started.

Then you get on-site, and reality has other ideas.

Maybe the wall isn't as flat as everyone expected. Maybe power isn't where the plans said it would be. The electrician is running behind. Someone discovers steel behind drywall that wasn't on the drawings. Or maybe the display itself takes far longer to install than anyone anticipated because the mounting system, cabinet alignment, or service access is more complicated than it should be.

We've seen all those situations over the years, and if there's one thing they've taught us, it's that projects rarely get into trouble because of one catastrophic mistake.

More often, it's a handful of small issues that quietly add hours to the schedule, increase labor costs, and create unnecessary stress for everyone involved. The good news? Most of them are preventable.

Here are 5 challenges we see most often, and a few lessons we've learned that can help keep your next project on track.

1. Trusting the Drawings More Than the Job Site

Construction documents are essential. We all rely on them. But we've also learned not to assume they're the final word.

Buildings can morph. Other trades make changes. Infrastructure gets relocated. Walls that looked perfect on paper suddenly aren't so perfect when you're standing in front of them with a laser level.

That's why we're big believers in spending the extra time on a thorough site survey. Before installation begins, we encourage our integration partners to verify things like:

  • Wall dimensions and flatness

  • Structural support

  • Power availability

  • Network locations

  • HVAC clearances

  • Viewing angles and sightlines

It might feel like one more item on an already busy schedule, but we've found that a few hours spent confirming conditions upfront can save days of rework later.

One of the most expensive words in our industry is "assumed."

2. Treating Cable Management as an Afterthought

Let's be honest, cable management usually isn't the most exciting part of a project. But it's often one of the most important.

We've walked into installations where the display looked fantastic from the front, but behind the wall was a maze of spaghetti-like cables that made future service almost impossible.

It might not seem like a problem on commissioning day. It becomes a very big problem the first time a technician has to replace a module or troubleshoot an issue. Good cable management isn't just about keeping things neat. It's about making the system maintainable for years to come.

When cable routing is planned early, you'll typically spend less time during installation, create better airflow, simplify future maintenance, and make life much easier for the next technician who services the wall.

That's something your customer may never see, but they'll absolutely appreciate it over the life of the system.

3. Forgetting That Every Display Will Eventually Need Service

Another thing we've learned over the years is that every display eventually needs attention. That isn't a reflection on quality. It's simply reality.

Whether it's replacing a module, performing routine maintenance, recalibrating the wall, or addressing an unexpected issue, service will eventually become part of the ownership experience. That's why we always encourage our integration partners to think beyond installation day.

Ask yourself:

How easy will this wall be to service five years from now?

If replacing a single component requires dismantling a large section of the display, that's going to cost your customer time and money every time maintenance is required.

Front-service accessibility, thoughtful cabinet design, and easy component access may not be the most glamorous product features, but they're some of the ones your service team will appreciate the most.

At Total LED, we've always believed that engineering shouldn't stop when the display turns on. It should continue through the entire life of the product.

4. Choosing Products Based Only on Specifications

We all love a good specification sheet.

  • Brightness.

  • Pixel pitch.

  • Refresh rate.

  • Contrast.

Those numbers absolutely matter. But they don't tell the whole story. We've seen products that look nearly identical on paper deliver completely different installation experiences.

One system goes together smoothly. The other requires constant adjustments, extra alignment, complicated mounting procedures, and additional labor that nobody planned for. That's why we encourage our integration partners to ask a different set of questions during product evaluation.

  • How repeatable is the installation?

  • How quickly do the cabinets align?

  • How much adjustment is available when the wall isn't perfect?

  • How accessible are components during installation?

  • Can technicians work efficiently without fighting the hardware?

Those questions rarely show up on a specification sheet, but they often have a much bigger impact on profitability than another few hundred nits of brightness. We've always believed products should make installers more productive, not give them another obstacle to overcome.

5. Waiting Until Something Goes Wrong to Ask for Help

One of the biggest differences we've noticed between manufacturers isn't always the product itself. It's what happens after the product leaves the warehouse. Some companies consider the shipment the finish line. We see it as the starting point.

The best technical support doesn't begin after a problem appears. It begins long before installation starts. Sometimes it's reviewing drawings. Sometimes it's answering engineering questions. Sometimes it's helping your team think through mounting details or identifying potential issues before anyone steps onto the job site.

Those conversations often prevent the problems that would otherwise become expensive delays. That's how we've always tried to support our integration partners.

Not simply by supplying displays, but by sharing the knowledge we've gained from years of helping teams deploy them successfully.

Great Projects Aren't Built on Luck

If you ask experienced project managers what separates a smooth installation from a difficult one, the answer usually isn't luck.

  • It's preparation

  • It's asking the right questions early.

  • It's choosing products that were designed with installers in mind.

  • It's working with partners who understand what actually happens on a commercial job site, not just what looks good in a product brochure.

Will every project still have surprises? Of course. Construction is dynamic, and every building presents its own challenges. But we've found that when products are engineered for real-world installation, when serviceability is part of the design, and when experienced support is available before it's needed, those surprises become much easier to manage.

Our Philosophy for dvLED Installation Best Practices

At Total LED, we spend a lot of time thinking about the people who actually install our products. Because that's where every successful project begins. Our job isn't simply to build an LED display that looks great after it's powered on. Our job is to help our integration partners deliver projects with fewer headaches, fewer surprises, and greater confidence from the moment the first cabinet comes out of the box.

If we can help you finish projects on schedule...

Reduce unnecessary labor...

Make future service easier...

And help you leave another satisfied customer behind...

Then we've done our job.

At the end of the day, customers rarely remember every technical specification of their video wall. What they remember is whether the project was delivered on time. Whether communication was clear. Whether challenges were handled professionally. And whether they felt confident recommending you for the next project.

In our experience, that's how long-term partnerships are built.

And that's exactly the kind of success we want to help our integration partners achieve.
